The FinSight origin story begins with the same question that many anglers ask themselves on the water: What fish species are actually beneath me right now? Even with great sonar, the answer was usually a guess. That frustration—and curiosity—became the starting point for FinSight.
Why the FinSight Origin Story Matters for Anglers
The idea behind FinSight grew slowly. It came from long days on Tennessee lakes and a summer guiding anglers in Montana. Every trip made one thing clear: anglers had become better at locating fish, but not better at knowing what they were actually targeting. That gap between visibility and knowledge shaped the FinSight origin story.

At the same time, conservation work introduced me to eDNA testing. The accuracy impressed me, but the long processing time didn’t fit real fishing conditions. Furthermore, that contrast pushed me toward a new direction: make biological insight fast, simple, and accessible. What Anglers Told Us
Talking with anglers changed everything. One tournament angler said:
“If FinSight could reveal the species before I waste time on a spot, that would change how I fish.”
Correspondingly, that insight reinforced the need for FinSight. Guides wanted predictability. Conservation partners wanted quick invasive-species detection. Altogether, their feedback pushed FinSight from concept to reality.
A Challenge That Forced a Pivot in the FinSight Origin
During early development, the biggest obstacle appeared: the original workflow was too slow and too complicated. Second, anglers said the science was exciting, but the process wouldn’t work on the water.
Furthermore, that challenge forced a major pivot. Following, we redesigned the entire workflow around single-use assays, built-in quality control, and a fast app-based analysis. Accordingly, this shift kept the product aligned with the real needs behind FinSight.
Values That Shape the FinSight Origin Story
Four core values guide every decision:
1. Clarity
Anglers deserve species-level insight that removes guesswork.
2. Conservation
Every scan helps monitor native and invasive species.
3. Simplicity
The technology must be effortless to use in real fishing conditions.
4. Community
The FinSight origin story is built on real angler feedback, not assumptions.
Above all, these values ensure FinSight supports both fishing success and healthier ecosystems.
What’s Next for FinSight
The next 3–6 months will bring major milestones:
-
A field-ready prototype
-
A 200-sample validation study
-
On-water trials with guides and tournament anglers
-
Education content and early demo releases
-
Kickstarter launch preparation
The FinSight origin story began with a simple question, but it has grown into something much bigger—a tool that helps anglers fish smarter and protect the waters they love. Additionally, you can read more about our mission and development journey on the About FinSight page. Also, as FinSight continues to grow, the goal remains the same: give every angler the confidence to make informed decisions on the water. Each step forward brings us closer to a tool that blends science, simplicity, and real-world fishing experience. Lastly, i’m beyond excited for the next phase of this journey and grateful for everyone who’s joined the journey so far.
